Kalaupapa - Shaped somewhat like a fish, has its head facing east, it's tail in the west and a dorsal fin rising from its back on Molokai's north shore. That dorsal fin is the nearly flat, ten-square-mile. |
Makanalua Peninsula which juts into the Pacific below the worlds highest sea cliffs. A place of stunning beauty, its been blessed by natures grandeur, and cursed by humanity's ignorance and fear. |

Molokai mule ride. An amazing day - almost sure to be remembered for a lifetime! |

On May 10, 1873, the first volunteer, Father Damien, arrived at the isolated settlement at Kalaupapa, where 816 lepers then lived. Damien worked with them to build a church and establish the Parish of Saint Philomena.
During this time, Father Damien cared for the lepers and improve the state of living. He aided the colony by teaching, painting houses, organizing farms, organizing the construction of chapels, roads, hospitals, and churches. He also personally dressed residents, dug graves, built coffins, ate food by hand with lepers, shared pipes with them, and lived with the lepers as equals. Father Damien also served as a priest during this time and spread the Catholic Faith to the lepers.
Damien spend sixteen years in the "living graveyard that was Molokai," where he died at the age of 49 in service to people suffering from the terrible disease of leprosy.

Richard Marks (1929-2008)
A survivor of Hansen's disease, or leprosy, looks out over the view of the ocean at Kalaupapa, Hawaii, with towering 1,600-foot cliffs in the background. |
Between the tears and memories of hundreds of funerals, Paul Harada found some comfort in the feeling that his dead friends and neighbors are now free. "In fact, I think these are the lucky ones - they're not going to suffer any more," he said.
Stricken with leprosy as a teenager, Harada was torn from his family and banished to this isolated peninsula on the island of Molokai to die.
2005, Harada, 76, was one of the last 40 elderly patients of Kalaupapa, where thousands from the Hawaiian islands were quarantined from society over the last century.
Harada has had the option of leaving this place of exile for decades. Yet, he chooses to stay.
"I'm all crippled. What am I going to do outside?" said Harada, raising his nearly fingerless hands to his aged, tanned face. "How am I going to live?"
Richard Marks, who educated tourists on the Hawaiian island of Molokai about Hansen's disease and the history of the Kalaupapa leprosy settlement and helped the state end its forced quarantine of the colony, died at 79.
As of our visit to Molokai on September 13, 2017 there were 14 Lepers living on Molokai. |

|
The leprosy victims, arriving by ship, were sometimes told to jump overboard and swim for their lives. Occasionally a strong rope was run from the anchored ship to the shore, and they pulled themselves painfully through the high, salty waves.
The ships crew would then throw into the water whatever supplies had been sent, relying on currents to carry them ashore or the exiles swimming to retrieve them. |
